The Pāṇḍya country, which was, according to tradition, once ruled by a virgin princess, Taṭātakai, identified with the goddess Mīṉākṣī;

Is this Pandya princess who defeated Mahishaka at Mysore, the goddess known as Mahishasura Marddini?

Stealing of cattle including buffalos (Mahisha) is quite common among the Pantya, Chola, Cheral kingdoms and is one of the many steps of war engagements between kingdoms.

Indra, Varuna, Kubera of south India

  1. Indra = Chola king - rules East; Indra worship dominant in Chola (Silappatikaram); descended from Sivi kings; a Sivi king is hailed as one among the many Indras (Mahabharata); gave Rama a chariot to fight with Ravana (Ramayana)
  2. Varuna = Cheral king - rules West; sea faring nation; lord of the seas; helped Rama to cross sea and reach Lanka, using his sea faring skills.
  3. Kubera = Southern Cheral king (Anamalai - Idukki - Agastya giri region - medicinal herbs; high altitude like Kailasa; close to Lanka; Hanuman reached here searching Mrita Sanjivani medicinal herbs;

In this song of Matavi praising Kaveri:- (Book 1 Chapter 7)

vāḻi avaṉtaṉ vaḷanāṭu

makavāy vaḷarkkum tāyāki

ūḻi uykkum pērutavi

oḻiyāy vāḻi kāvēri.

ūḻi uykkum pērutavi

oḻiyātu oḻukal uyirōmpum

āḻi āḷvāṉ pakalveyyōṉ

aruḷē vāḻi kāvēri. 27

വാഴി അവൻതൻ വളനാടു

മകവായ് വളർക്കും തായാകി

ഊഴി ഉയ്ക്കും പേരുതവി

ഒഴിയായ് വാഴി കാവേരി.

ഊഴി ഉയ്ക്കും പേരുതവി

ഒഴിയാതു ഒഴുകൽ ഉയിർഓമ്പും

ആഴി ആള്വാൻ പകല്വെയ്യോൻ

Here Vazhi (വാഴി) has double meaning:- 1) May you prosper / Live Long; 2) Married woman not living with her husband; grass-widow - praising Kaveri here but indirectly praising Kannaki who though married is now living without her husband (Kovalan)
