Shalya Parva describes the battle where the Kauravas were led by Shalya a king of the kingdom of Madra as their commander in chief. Shalya was the maternal uncle of Nakula and Sahadeva, the youngest twin Pandavas. He was an ally of the Pandavas, but forced into helping the Kauravas, through some crooked policy of Duryodhana. After joining the Kaurava army, Shalya fought against the Pandavas according to the spirit of a warrior, though he liked the Pandavas a lot. On the 18th day of battle Yudhishthira and Shalya came face to face. In that dual Yudhishthira killed Shalya.
