Drona Parva describes the battle where the Kauravas were led by Drona as their commander in chief. Drona was fierce in battle and caused severe loss to Pandava army. In order to annihilate Drona Pandavas had to resort to some unconventional plan. They decided to distract Drona with some stunning news. Bhima slew an elephant of the name Ashwathama. He then proclaimed that Ashwathama was slain. Drona's beloved son was named Aswathama, who also fought on the side of the Kauravas. Believing that his son Aswathama was slain, Drona filled with grief. He asked Yudhishthira if the news were true. Yudhishthira confirmed the news. Drona became devoid of energy and stood motionless in battle. Then Dhristadyumna, the prince of Panchala and the commander of the Pandava army rushed towards Drona and cut of his head with his sword.
