The seven mothers associated with Skanda were called Saptamatas. The people associated with Skanda were mentioned numerously in Mahabharata. They represent a matriarchal culture with a native religion predominant with goddess worship. Skanda worship mentioned in Mahabharata has a regional connection with northern portion of ancient Saraswati river and with Uttaranchal region. These are very close to Yaksha territories (southern Tibet) and with Stri-rajya further north.
