Most prominent among the divine-mothers or the Deva-matas were Aditi Diti and Danu. The sons of Aditi were Adityas, considered as the Deva group. the sons of Diti were Daityas and those of Danu were Danavas. Both the Daityas and the Danavas were Asuras, the group opposing the Devas due to cultural differences. There is reason to speculate that these mothers were some ancient matriarchal clan-chiefs that gave race to distinct but related human races. Diti and Danu were worshiped by many cultures in Europe as goddesses. The river name Danube has etymological similarity with Danu. These mothers are akin to the daughters or the grand daughters of the mitochondrial Eve.
