Ganga is the largest river of India. It had the same name even during the epic ages. After the drying up of river Saraswati, the population moved from the Saraswati basin to the Ganga basin along the river and its tributaries like Charmanwati and Yamuna. The name Ganga is a non-Sanskrit name. It is a name probable given by the pre-historic tribes that existed in this region, like the Yakshas, Rakshasas, Kinnaras, Nagas and the Gandharvas.
